Spreader Mat also known as capillary matting is used primarily in NFT systems. Spreader mat is layed out in the NFT channel and then rockwool blocks are placed on top. As the roots grow they spread throughout the matting, which also serves to spread the flow of nutrient water across the area of the NFT tray.
